The US and Britain bomb the Houthis in Yemen for the second time in a joint operation

USA and the United Kingdom yesterday, Monday, bombed several Houthi rebel positions in Yemen in what represents the two nations’ second joint operation against that group.

As reported by the Pentagon (the headquarters of the US Department of Defense) in a statement, the operation had as one of its main objectives the destruction of one of the underground warehouses where the Houthis keep some of the missiles they use against boats in the Red Sea. The strikes also destroyed missile systems used by the Houthis, as well as air defense systems and radars.

Overall, the operation targeted eight areas in Yemen that were under Houthi control and were reportedly used as bases against shipping in the Red Sea, the Pentagon detailed.

The bombings, which started at around 11:59 pm local time in Sanaa (20:59 GMT), were carried out by the United States and the United Kingdom with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands.

The new attack comes ten days after the United States and Britain launched their first joint attack 60 targets in Yemen related to the Houthis, in what was the first major retaliation against the insurgents for the attacks in the Red Sea.

European naval mission

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of the European Union They agreed yesterday on the need to establish a European naval mission in the Red Sea to ensure navigational security in the area in light of the attacks the Houthis are launching on merchant ships.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, explained that “they still need to finalize the details on the mission’s mandate and the timetable for its launch.” The EU intends for European ships to escort shipping companies passing through the Bab al Mandeb Strait, and also have the capacity to shoot down drones and missiles that the Houthis might launch at them.
