The director of Cáritas de Pamplona-Tudela has emphasized the role of the guaranteed income as “a brake on poverty and exclusion”, but points out that “it is not a magic wand”.
The director of Cáritas Diocesana de Pamplona-Tudela, Ángel Iriarte, warned at the opening of the Tombola 2022 in Pamplona that the energy crisis and that caused by the war in Ukraine have “terrible” consequences for the most vulnerable people.
“We had not yet come out of the 2008 crisis, the pandemic came to us, and we did not get out of the pandemic crisis, and the energy crisis and the Ukraine crisis have come to us,” he lamented. It’s a situation that ‘gives a lot of families a really bad time’.
In this regard, he emphasized that the Guaranteed Income it is “a brake on poverty and exclusion”, but “it is not a magic wand”.
“If one of us lives on Guaranteed Income alone, he gets 600 euros a month,” he explained. “I don’t think anyone ends the month with 600 euros if they have to pay electricity, water, mortgage, rent, food, clothes…”, he noted. For this reason, he insisted that this advantage is “a very great help and should be maintained, but” it’s not a magic wand solve all problems.”
Asked about the current situation, Iriarte emphasized the increased attention of Cáritas due to the opening of the borders, which remained closed due to the pandemic. A circumstance that caused “no new people to arrive” and which has now “radically changed” with the arrival of people come mainly from Colombia, Peru, Central America and Morocco.
On the other hand, he stressed that the pandemic “has not brought us new problems, but has exacerbated the problems we already had or brought to light problems that we may not have realized were there”. One, he pointed out, is the digital divide, which he sees as “a new form of exclusion” for people who “don’t interact with computers”.
In addition, he has emphasized that the pandemic has had “a tremendous impact on mental health”, especially among young people, something he considers “a real problem”.
