At least three people have been killed in a helicopter crash at a Canadian ski resort. Four others were taken to hospital in critical condition, Canadian media reported on Tuesday evening (local time), citing the heli-ski company that offered the flight in the province of British Columbia.
During heli-skiing, winter sports enthusiasts are flown to a summit by helicopter. From there the descent through deep powder snow begins. “It is impossible to express the deep sadness in words,” said the company director. “The guests who ski with us and the employees who work with us every season are part of our family.”
South Tyrolean well-known entrepreneur among victims
The identities of the victims have now become known; it concerns Heiner Oberrauch junior, son of the well-known entrepreneur Georg Oberrauch. Oberrauch operates one of the largest sports store chains and sports textile manufacturers in Europe; the company’s brands include Salewa, Icepeak and Gaastra.
All help also came too late for Andreas Widmann, director of the South Tyrolean sports fashion manufacturer TEXmarket, best known as a sportswear manufacturer. The third fatality was the pilot of the helicopter.
Cause of accident unclear
According to information, the crash occurred on Monday afternoon north of the town of Terrace, almost 700 kilometers northwest of Vancouver.
The helicopter was an Agusta A119 Koala that could carry up to eight people, the news website ‘Global News’ reported. No information was initially released about a possible cause of the accident.
