Last year, the number of wrong-way drivers increased dramatically throughout Austria. There were a total of 444 wrong-way drivers. This is the highest value in fifteen years.
The frightening figures were reported by the traffic department of radio station Ö3. There were 54 more reports, or an increase of 14 percent compared to 2022. Last year, two people were killed in wrong-way driving accidents – in 2022 there were no deaths – eight people were seriously injured and 15 were slightly injured. In 2023, wrong-way drivers were reported most often in November (49 times).
Most wrong-way driving accidents in Lower Austria
A total of 14 accidents involving wrong-way drivers occurred in 2023. That is twice as much as the year before. Most accidents in which the driver drove in the wrong direction occurred in Lower Austria. The fewest wrong-way drivers are reported from Vienna. Upper Austria recorded the largest increase in wrong-way driving.
Southern highway severely affected
The most wrong-way driving was recorded on the South motorway (A2), with 73 reports, followed by the West motorway (A1) and the Tauern motorway (A10).
Villach as ‘ghost driver hotspot’
The wider area around Villach was once again considered an absolute ‘ghost driver hotspot’. A total of 62 wrong-way drivers were counted on the A2, A10, A11 and at the Villach junction – which corresponds to 14 percent of all wrong-way drivers in all of Austria.
As in previous years, there were more wrong-way drivers on weekends in 2023 than on weekdays. The day of the week with the most wrong-way drivers is Saturday.
Lack of concentration due to psychological problems
The main reasons for wrong-way driving are the influence of alcohol and drugs, but also excessive demands and distraction. According to traffic psychologists, an increased lack of concentration due to psychological problems resulting from personal and global crises could play a role.
