Disastrous operation for the police in the Tyrolean winter sports resort of St. Anton am Arlberg: a German holidaymaker fell 60 meters over steep terrain and was left injured in a partially frozen stream bed. When an Alpine police officer tried to climb to the injured man, he too lost his balance and fell into the depths.
That happened last Saturday, but the police only reported it on Thursday. What happened? The 34-year-old German climbed a wall at a bar while looking for his skis. “As he leaned over the railing, he lost his balance and fell approximately 60 meters over steep terrain before coming to rest in the partially frozen Steißbach,” the researchers said.
The injured person made an emergency call
The holidaymaker suffered significant injuries, but was able to make an emergency call himself. A short time later, a police patrol with an Alpine police officer arrived on the scene.
Alpine police officer also crashed
The Alpine police officer then tried to climb to the injured person near the crash site, but lost his balance on the hard frozen snow after about 15 meters and also fell about 40 meters into the Steißbach stream below. The officer was also injured.
Both injured people were eventually rescued by the St. Anton mountain rescue service with a pulley and taken by ambulance to Zams Hospital after first aid.
