Styria’s mountain rescuers once again achieved great things on Saturday: the heavy storms had put hikers in the Hochschwab region in an extremely unfortunate situation. One of them was seriously injured and at the same time hailstones fell. They could all be saved.
On Saturday afternoon, a nine-member hiking group was walking from Hackentörl to Hackenalm in Seewiesen when one of them seriously injured his leg. His companions immediately called 911. Everything had to be done quickly, because the next challenge was already noticeable in the air: a hailstorm was approaching!
A rescue helicopter was deployed
The Turnau Mountain Rescue Service and the fire brigade left, and the Christophorus 17 rescue helicopter also arrived on the scene. But soon afterwards hail and heavy rain fell, making the rescue operation a herculean task for the eight mountain rescuers.
All hikers were rescued
When they arrived at the scene of the accident, the seriously injured person received emergency medical attention and was taken down the mountain to a hospital. The rest of the walking group also arrived safely in the valley. The firefighters then returned them to their vehicles.
