Unique photos were recently taken at a marine aquarium in the city of Balneario Camboriu in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. They show how a seahorse father – yes, you read that right – gives birth to hundreds of seahorse babies (see above).
The amazing film footage of the birth, which has only now been released, was taken on January 16. The video (see above) shows the male seahorse flexing his body and repeatedly pushing a stream of young animals into the water. According to the aquarium, “more than 300 seahorses” have been born.
Man responsible for pregnancy
In seahorses, bony fish, the males become pregnant. The females produce the eggs and inject them into the male’s abdominal pouch during sexual intercourse, where they are fertilized by the male sperm.
Depending on the species, females lay between 150 and 2,000 eggs in the male’s brood pouch. There, the eggs are surrounded by a tissue that mainly regulates the embryos’ respiration by absorbing carbon dioxide from the eggs and releasing oxygen to the eggs.
After birth, the offspring must fend for themselves
In addition, the substance creates an environment that corresponds to the salinity in seawater. The development of the seahorses took about a month, the sea aquarium said. From birth, the young fish are immediately on their own and immediately start hunting for plankton and small crustaceans.
