Not a quiet Sunday for our fire brigades in Burgenland. Two sensational missions kept 150 volunteers busy.
Sunday in Oberdorf in the Oberwart district was anything but quiet. Shortly before 10.30 am the sirens sounded after a fire broke out in a roof structure and shortly afterwards the entire supporting structure was on fire. From a distance, a huge column of dark smoke could be seen rising above the city of 1,000 inhabitants. The seventy emergency services from three fire brigades were able to quickly bring the fire under control, but the extinguishing work continued for several hours. The material damage is enormous. The exact cause must first be determined by specialists.
Fire in a single-family home with injuries
That night, a spectacular large-scale operation involving seven fire brigades took place in the Oberwart district. A fire raged in a single-family home in Altschlaining. The alarm went off at 3:39 am. The resident was able to escape life-threatening fumes, but suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Oberwart Hospital after treatment by Red Cross paramedics.
80 volunteers got the fire under control
“One room in particular was affected by the fire. However, it was feared that the flames would spread quickly. We immediately began an internal attack,” the report said immediately after the initial assessment of the danger situation. Respiratory protection teams quickly arrived on scene with fire lines. More than 80 volunteers did a fantastic job. Around 4:15 am the operations manager was finally able to give the ‘fire out’ command. Now it is the police’s turn to clarify the cause.
