Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urgently warned that if Russia beats his country, other European countries, such as Germany, will also be in danger. The German federal government has now realized that “Russia will get closer to Germany if we don’t hold out,” Zelensky said in an ARD interview broadcast Sunday evening and recorded Wednesday.
The Ukrainian leader added that it seemed to him that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz “understands this risk. And that clearly means: Third World War.” Zelensky added that he could not say whether Russia would first target Germany, Poland or the Baltic states after a victory over Ukraine.
“Support remains important”
The Ukrainian head of state called for further aid for his country. Any support from its partners is of great importance for Ukraine, “so that Ukraine does not feel like it is alone.” Germany and other states should show whether, from their point of view, Ukraine “is right and Russia should be put in its place.”
Regarding the row over the supply of Taurus cruise missiles from Germany to Ukraine, Zelensky said this was “a topic” in his talks with Scholz. He would not comment further on the status of the talks. However, he stressed that it would “hardly help” Germany if it kept important weapons for itself instead of making them available to Ukraine in its current fight against Russia.
“Russian aggression not taken seriously”
At the same time, Zelensky recalled that Germany had not taken Russia’s aggression against Ukraine seriously enough for a long time. “I was disappointed by German policy, which, when Crimea was occupied, did not play the role” that Ukraine, Europe and the world “deserved,” Zelensky said, referring to Russia’s annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula in 2019-2014.
February 24 marks the second year since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. In the ARD interview, Zelenskyj admitted the need to relieve frontline soldiers through more frequent replacements. Zelensky said it was clear to him that, given the achievements of Ukrainian soldiers, “gratitude is not enough.” “We need a fair rotation, they need a vacation because money alone can’t make up for this.”
Zelensky pointed out that a new law is being prepared for more frequent replacement of frontline soldiers. The government in Kiev is responding to repeated protests from relatives of the frontline soldiers demanding help for the fighters.
