In Rome, civic associations are now protesting against homeless people spending the night near St. Peter’s Square. It was said that they would repeatedly consume a lot of alcohol and become violent. Currently, homeless people in Italy cannot be ordered to stay overnight in community or church facilities.
Although there are places available in the accommodation, many of those affected prefer to sleep outside, the city of Rome said. For example, some homeless people travel with dogs that cannot access the facilities.
Because temperatures are currently relatively low, tents have been set up for them near St. Peter’s Square. Volunteers from the basic community of San’Egidio bring food. Not far from St. Peter’s Square is the Vatican Charity Center “Dono di Maria”, where nuns provide two meals a day for about 100 people in need. There is also healthcare and overnight accommodation for 50 to 70 women. The background to the facility is the death of several homeless people near the Vatican in the cold winter of 1986.
Problems with alcohol and violence
Nowadays there is resistance due to excessive alcohol consumption and fights, where, according to citizen associations, the police should intervene. According to estimates by the community of Sant’Egidio, there are approximately 8,000 homeless people living in Rome. They cannot be ordered to stay overnight in facilities, the city of Rome said.
