A 14-year-old boy in Tyrol apparently had a hankering for chewing gum and fervently tried to get it. He quickly grabbed a Bunsen burner and ‘cracked’ the machine open. Now he ended up in court in Innsbruck for this.
A 14-year-old Turk living in Tyrol now knows how quickly you can end up in court for ‘nonsense’. “We just wanted candy,” the teen said, visibly nervous. “Armed” with a Bunsen burner, he and an accomplice tried to obtain chewing gum and allegedly burned the glass on two machines in October of the previous year.
The young defendant claimed not to have been present at the first case in which candy was actually stolen in Innsbruck. But a day later he confessed to the attempted theft. “I never want to do something like that again,” the 14-year-old said ruefully.
Student escaped without conviction
The judge and the Public Prosecution Service ultimately showed leniency and granted the slot machine burglar a diversionary maneuver. The proceedings were temporarily halted for a two-year probationary period. The student, who was also given a probationary period, must pay 160 euros to the operator of the chewing gum machine.
“Make sure you do well at school, so you don’t have to steal,” the judge finally told him.
