After a wolf sighting in the middle of the urban residential area of Bludenz (Vorarlberg), natural ecologist Hubert Schatz reassures – at least for the time being.
The video in which a wolf wanders around in deserted Bludenz – filmed by a driver – quickly went viral on Wednesday. Natural ecologist Hubert Schatz also looked at the wolf’s 22 seconds – and initially sees things as quite relaxed. Is it even a wolf that was filmed here? “We don’t have 100 percent certainty, but the probability is quite high,” he explains.
For the first time, the large predator was discovered in the middle of an urban settlement in Vorarlberg. “That could happen. If he goes from the Rätikon to the Großes Walsertal, he will pass Bludenz. But I hope this will not become an everyday occurrence.” The wolf also showed fearful behavior, and certainly not aggressive behavior. “If he had shown his teeth, it would be something different.”
That’s why Schatz doesn’t want to classify the wild animal as a risk specimen – not yet. This requires several observations in the settlement area. All in all, the wildlife biologist reassures: “Something like this is nothing special, wolves travel for miles. Only if repeated observations would decisive measures be necessary.” But it’s also important to take any indication of a wolf seriously.
