Scientists have discovered a new lizard species in Peru’s former Inca city of Machu Picchu. The new species was named Proctoporus optimus. Based on the character Optimus Prime from the sci-fi movie Transformers, which was partially shot in Machu Picchu, according to the Peruvian Conservation Authority (SERNANP).
SERNANP reports that another new lizard species (pictured below) has been discovered in the Machiguenga Natural Park. It was named Proctoporus katerynae, after the biologist Kateryn Pino Bolaños. Both species are considered endangered. Above all, climate change is causing problems for the medium-sized lizards.
The city of Machu Picchu is one of the top tourist attractions in South America. It was built by the Incas in the Andes in the 15th century and consists of about 200 buildings. Up to 3000 tourists a day visit the ruins.
Inca city was discovered in 1911
Built by the Inca ruler Pachacútec, Machu Picchu was discovered in July 1911 by American archaeologist Hiram Bingham. Today, the ruins are among the best-known archaeological sites in the world. In 1983, the Inca city, located on a ridge at 2500 meters altitude, was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
