Joining NATO – Orban insists on visiting Kristersson

Date:

The Hungarian government does not want to ratify Sweden’s accession to NATO until Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson visits his colleague Orbán in Budapest. The ruling party Fidesz announced this on Friday. Kristersson and Orban met briefly on Thursday at a special EU summit in Brussels.

Kristersson then stated that the conversation with Orban went well. He did not comment specifically on a meeting in Hungary, but said he preferred not to travel to Budapest until the Hungarian government had ratified Sweden’s accession to NATO. Hungary is the only one of the 31 states in the military alliance that has not ratified Sweden’s membership. One argument is the alleged criticism of the state of the Hungarian constitutional state.

Session of Parliament on Monday
The left-liberal opposition has called for a special session of parliament on Monday, February 5. The governing parties Fidesz and KDNP have already announced that their MPs will not participate. The opposition was able to pass the meeting with the necessary number of votes, but cannot influence the content because this also requires the votes of Fidesz. The actual session of Parliament does not start until February 26.

As a result of the war in Ukraine, the Swedish government, together with that of Finland, applied for NATO membership in May 2022. Finland was admitted in early April 2023.
