Together with a 47-year-old colleague, a 37-year-old Tyrolean – both from the Schwaz district – was on a snowmobile on Saturday in the Wildkogel ski arena in neighboring Salzburg’s Pinzgau. For reasons that are still unclear, the car left the lane and crashed into a steel beam. The 37-year-old was fatally injured and died at the scene of the accident.
It was already dark when the two Tyroleans rode a snowmobile on a groomed piste for snow groomers at about 2,100 meters above sea level. The vehicle suddenly veered from the right side of the roadway onto unpaved ground, lost control and struck a steel beam head-on. The impact threw both people from the vehicle.
The snow plow driver provided first aid
The 37-year-old Tyrolean was fatally injured and died at the scene of the accident. Despite his injuries, the 47-year-old managed to attract the attention of a snow plow driver. This started the rescue chain and first aid was provided. After initial treatment, the elderly man was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck. The Salzburg public prosecutor ordered an autopsy of the deceased and a blood test on the 47-year-old.
The police temporarily secured the accident vehicle. The exact nature of the accident and who the driver was are still being investigated.
