There has been war in the Gaza Strip for more than 120 days. In response to the October 7 Hamas terror, Israel launched massive bombings and a ground offensive that is still ongoing – and has now reduced large swathes of Palestinian territory to rubble. Krone+ has created time-lapse videos from ESA satellite photos that clearly show the tragic consequences of the war.
Corey Scher of New York University and Jamon Van den Hoek of Oregon State University use freely available satellite photos from ESA to determine the level of destruction in wars and conflicts. They look for unusual height differences in buildings, which is an indication of damage. American geographers have been using the method successfully for years, but the devastation in the Gaza Strip is frightening even for them. “We have worked on Ukraine, we have also looked at Aleppo in Syria and other cities, but the scale and speed of the damage in Gaza is remarkable.”
