A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump does not have immunity from charges of attempted election fraud. However, the question will likely only be finally clarified by the country’s highest court – possibly after the November elections…
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected Trump’s claim that he could not be prosecuted because the charges were related to his official duties as president.
This means that Trump does not have any immunity from lawsuits related to the storming of the Capitol in 2020. There was initially no statement from the ex-president.
Trump still has a ways to go before the Supreme Court
The leading Republican presidential candidate can now appeal to the full bench of the Court of Appeals and, if rejected again, to the Supreme Court. This would delay the process for weeks or months – possibly until after the election in early November.
