Fewer working hours – Transdev and the GDL union reached an agreement

Date:

The German railway company Transdev and the train drivers’ union GDL have agreed on a collective labor agreement. From March 1 and December 1, there will be an increase of 210 euros for employees and working hours for shift workers will also be gradually reduced.

From January 1, 2025, employees must still work 35 hours per week. “Employees who want to work more can do so for a pro-rata wage,” according to the machinists’ union GDL.

The GDL has gone on strike several times at Transdev in recent weeks. Germany’s second-largest railway company said in a press release on Tuesday that the agreement was aimed at preventing further labor disputes. “Given the economic consequences for the Transdev companies and also in the interests of passengers, further strikes cannot be risked,” the report said. However, the consequences for the sector cannot yet be precisely estimated.

Does Deutsche Bahn agree?
However, the new arrangement is also subject to the condition that Deutsche Bahn (DB) agrees to the reduction in working hours in its negotiations with the GDL. The agreement is valid until the end of June 2025 for the GDL members of NordWestBahn, Transdev Hannover/Central Germany/Region Ost, Transdev Rhein-Ruhr and Trans Regio.

The union is still negotiating new fares with Deutsche Bahn (see video above). A peace obligation applies until March 3, during which period the GDL does not want to strike. According to both parties, there should be a new conclusion by then.
