About ten weeks after the House of Representatives elections in the Netherlands, right-wing populist Geert Wilders’ coalition talks with three other right-wing parties have failed, according to media reports.
The center-right party NSC (New Social Contract) decided not to continue the talks in The Hague on Tuesday evening.
In the November 22 elections, radical right-wing populist Geert Wilders and his anti-Islam party PVV became the strongest force, winning 37 of the 150 seats in parliament.
Wilders had previously negotiated the formation of a government with the right-liberal People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) of outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte, but also with the NSC and the smaller right-wing populist farmers’ movement BBB.
The minority government would be patient
NSC faction leader Pieter Omtzigt had constitutional concerns about the cooperation even before the talks started. So far, the VVD has only been willing to tolerate a minority government led by Wilders, without involving its own ministers.
