Psychologist in conversation: – “Inflation is an invitation to renounce”

Date:

In a krone.tv conversation with Jürgen Winterleitner, Christine Hackl, renowned psychologist and author, provides insight into the psychological challenges associated with times of crisis and shows how we can become more psychologically resilient through resilience and the right coping strategies.

The psychologist emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility and actively dealing with crises for mental health. She explains that crises arise not only from a critical situation, but also from a feeling of helplessness. Hackl says in the krone.tv interview: “A crisis really separates a life into a life ‘before’ and a life ‘after’. And the ‘after’ can be good and beautiful again. But that does have some characteristics and effects when people directly experience and go through a crisis.”

How do political decisions affect the psychological resilience of different social classes? Hackl says: “If I may put it very simply: the more dependent someone is on political decisions, the greater the impact this has on someone. So in other words, if I rely on social benefits, i.e. unemployment benefits, emergency aid, other forms of support, then that obviously has a much greater impact on me.”

Inflation: one of many crises that put psychological pressure on people
Many people also see themselves under economic pressure due to inflation and higher prices. This also affects the psyche. From Christine Hackl’s point of view, the price increase is an invitation to do without: “If you take away the aspect of the burden, then this time you should really be seen as an invitation to make conscious purchasing decisions and approach life consciously again , including by consciously shopping and eating less waste. Because if you think about what is still being thrown away, even though it is becoming more and more expensive, something is not right. “So we have to look at that,” says the psychologist.

To emerge from this permanent state of crisis, Hackl recommends that society focus on values and common goals rather than getting lost in disagreements. An important aspect is social connectedness, which serves as an essential resilience factor in times of crisis.
