The Hungarian opposition held a special parliamentary session last Monday on Sweden’s accession to NATO. But due to the collective absence of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s faction, no decision could be made. Now the US is slowly losing patience with its alliance partner.
“Our patience cannot be unlimited,” US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said in Brussels on Wednesday. Washington hopes “for a constructive resolution to this issue in the very near future.”
Sullivan attended a meeting of the 31 NATO countries and Sweden in the Belgian capital. All security advisers had made it clear to the Hungarian representative that it was finally time for Sweden to join, he said.
Waiting for ratification
Hungary is the last NATO country that has not yet ratified the Swedish accession protocol. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he spoke with Orbán on the phone a few days ago. He assured him again that he supported Swedish membership and that the necessary vote in parliament would take place soon.
But Orbán was unable or unwilling to keep this promise. There is a suspicion within NATO and the EU that Orban wants to discipline Sweden because of his criticism of the lack of the rule of law in Hungary.
