Until Monday evening, visitors to the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna can marvel at the titan arum “Willi”. Flowering started on Sunday at 2:30 PM and lasted about two days. Some visitors even stayed overnight to observe the natural phenomenon. In the meantime, the spectacular nature event can also be followed via a live stream on YouTube.
The three meter high inflorescence is one of the largest flowers in the world and comes from the arum family, originally from Indonesia. A specimen of the titan arum “Willi” has been growing in the botanical garden of the University of Vienna since 2019.
bestial stench
The unusual plant is also known for its bestial stench, similar to a rotting carcass. In its homeland, the stench attracts insects such as carrion flies and dung beetles so they can pollinate the inflorescence. However, the stench only sets in when the large piston at the top of the knob heats up.
The plant is originally from the Botanical Garden of the University of Salzburg, where it bloomed in 2019. Since the move to Vienna, the weight of the plant has doubled to 80 kilograms.
mMonday open until 11 pm
The main bloom seems to have passed, but in the botanical garden at 14 Rennweg visitors can watch the arum “Willi” in the botanical garden at 14 Rennweg until late in the evening. Entrance costs four euros.
