More than a year ago we reported on the case of reader Gertraud N., living in Vienna-Simmering. After the renovation of the community building where she lives, she could no longer leave her apartment without outside help. Now there is finally a solution in this case.
The retiree, who is dependent on a wheelchair for health reasons, has lived in a municipal apartment since 1969. Renovation of the residential complex started in 2018 and various measures have been taken to guarantee accessibility.
Entrance door as a barrier
For example, elevators have been installed so that you can get to your apartment without stairs. And new front doors have also been installed that comply with the currently applicable fire safety regulations. This was exactly what became a problem for Mrs. N.
The reader could no longer leave the apartment alone
That is why the reader’s daughter and son wrote to the ombudsman – after contacting Wiener Wohnen in vain. The new entrance door was so difficult for the lady to open that she could no longer leave the house independently in her wheelchair – and conversely, she could of course not open the door of the community building either.
The landlord did not want to install a door opener
Wiener Wohnen pointed out to the ombudsman at the time that setting up and repairing an automatic opening device would be expensive, but that the tenant could apply to change apartments. Those affected and their relatives saw this as an insult, as the intention at the time was to renovate the facility barrier-free.
Arbitration requested
However, the family was not satisfied with the landlord’s response and subsequently submitted an application to the Ministry of Social Affairs for mediation due to discrimination. And look: in April 2023, Wiener Wohnen promised to install an automatic door opener.
It took until early December 2023 for the actual assembly to take place. But at least Mrs. N. can now leave her apartment again – without having to rely on outside help. The case shows once again: perseverance pays off!
