Much ado about nothing? Not quite: the artist from Vorarlberg wanted to have his skin auctioned on Thursday evening in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. A Swiss thwarted his plan. The evening turned out to be an event.
The planned action by artist Flatz has already attracted a lot of attention in advance. After all, he wanted to have his skin auctioned. More specifically, tattoos. These should be preserved after his death and hung on the wall as works of art. The auction, it was said, was taken over by Christie’s. The auction should have taken place in the context of the opening of the Flatz show in the Pinakothek der Moderne.
Swiss collectors in action
But nothing came of it. Although there were approximately 1,000 interested parties present, the general director of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Bernhard Maaz, concluded his opening speech by announcing that the auction had been canceled. The reason is no less strange: a Swiss collector would have insisted in advance on purchasing all thirteen tattoos. Apparently his wish was granted.
Consolation prize
There was a consolation prize for the many visitors: Flatz finally took the stage – dressed in a bathrobe. Finally, he climbed onto a rotating exhibition surface, dropped his coat and spun on his own axis for several minutes.
