The average age at which people are self-employed has increased by 2.4 years over the past ten years. According to EITB Data, seven out of ten self-employed people work in the service sector, both in the BAC and in Navarre.
In the Basque Country, six in ten self-employed people are men, and the average age of self-employed people is now 47.8 years. In just ten years, the average age of self-employed people will increase has grown in 2.4 years.
So from the latest EITB data on the self-employment and entrepreneurship, It turns out that six out of ten self-employed people are men, both in Euskadi (61%) as in Navarre (64%) and in the state (63%). Women therefore only have four in ten self-employed jobs.
If we compare this data with that of wage-earning employment, we see that the gender distribution is more even in this case. In fact, men make up almost half of workers in Euskadi (51%), Navarre (52%) and the state (51%).

On the other hand, EITB Data concludes that in the past decade self-employment is ageing, both in Euskadi and in Navarre and in the state.
Currently, the average age of the self-employed is 47.8 years in Euskadi, by 47.5 years in Navarre and 47.2 in the state. This figure has increased by 2.4 years in the BAC, by 1.7 years in Navarre and by 1.9 years in the state over the past decade.
That middle age is four to five years higher than that of salaried employees. In all three areas it is less than 44 years: Euskadi (43.9), Navarre (43.2) and State (42.5 years).
By age group, three in ten employees are self-employed 55 years or older, tripling the weight of youth employment (about 12%).
Furthermore, the self-employed will retire laterwith an average age of 66.3 years in the state, almost a year and a half more than in the case of employees (64.9 years).
What does the self-employed do?
Apart from public administration, self-employed people can be found in almost all economic activities. But almost half of self-employment is concentrated in the retail, construction, catering or specialized services.
For example, in Euskadi, out of 163,308 jobs are for self-employed people 114,267 (69.9%) they are committed to service sector. The majority here consists of people who work in retail (26,820), specialized services (14,808) or the catering industry (14,260). The industry, construction and primary sectors account for the majority of the rest of the self-employed.
In Navarre, of the 43,021 self-employed people, 28,815 also belong to the service sector (66.9%) and in the state, of the 3,159,758 self-employed people, 2,333,589 are also concentrated in this area (73.8%).
