From June, refugees from Ukraine will have to pay for parking spaces in the city of Vienna. Free travel on public transport has been extended.
Lately things have calmed down a bit around war refugees from Ukraine. A few hundred a day still register at the city’s arrival center, but the rush is over.
According to the office of social affairs councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ), nearly 21,000 displaced persons – a third of them children and young people – have registered in Vienna since the start of hostilities. Until now, these people can use public transport and parking for free (the latter sometimes caused a stir).
As of June 1, parking will in any case be over. Ukrainians now also pay fees. According to the magistrate, nearly 1,000 car owners with Ukrainian number plates have applied for a parking sticker.
Public transport free until the end of June
According to the hacker bureau, the use of the metro and the like will remain free until the end of June. Originally it should have ended at the end of May. A national solution is being sought for a settlement after June.
