After special elections in a New York constituency, Republicans’ slim majority in the US House of Representatives has shrunk further. The seat had become vacant because the House had expelled scandal-hit politician George Santos. Democrat Tom Suozzi won the open seat, according to a projection by Edison Research.
Santos had told numerous lies in his biography and had been accused of fraud. As a result of the success of the Democratic elections, the Republican majority in the House of Representatives melts to 219 votes to 213.
A huge loss of seats
Suozzi’s victory will have an immediate impact in Washington. After taking office, Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson’s room for maneuver is shrinking. Going forward, the Trump disciple can only afford to lose two votes on party bills. The Republicans cannot actually afford any deviations until the November elections.
Right-wing Republicans in the House of Representatives have long opposed further US aid to Ukraine. A corresponding package was recently passed in the US Senate, after months of trench warfare. Johnson has already announced his rejection of the package of measures. However, losing the seat will make it even more difficult to continue blocking support.
