A German was arrested at St. Petersburg airport on Tuesday after Russian customs officials found six THC-containing gummy bears in his luggage upon entry. The 38-year-old now faces a prison sentence of up to seven years.
According to Russian authorities, the man wanted to travel through Russia and meet an acquaintance with whom he had corresponded on the Internet. He bought the gummy bears at a specialty store in Germany. He said they helped him sleep better on long trips.
The German, who flew from Hamburg via Istanbul to St. Petersburg, said he had never had any problems with customs in other countries.
Memories of the Brittney Grinner case
American basketball player Brittney Griner, who also played for a Russian club, was arrested in Russia in 2022 for small amounts of cannabis oil.
She was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug smuggling, but was then exchanged for a Russian arms dealer imprisoned in the United States.
