Excitement in Washington: Is Russia Developing Anti-Satellite Weapon Systems for Space? The statement by a leading US Republican and the consistent media reports are causing nervousness – and anger – among US lawmakers.

The United States has briefed Congress and European allies on new intelligence about Russian nuclear capabilities that could pose an international threat. A person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday, confirming a report in the New York Times.

Weapons for space
The new capabilities do not pose an immediate threat to the United States, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The findings are linked to Russian efforts to develop a space weapon.

On Wednesday, US House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner’s warning of a “serious threat to national security” in the US led to guesswork.

High level of secrecy
Turner called on President Joe Biden to make “all information about this threat” public. Two people familiar with the matter said Turner’s statement was related to Russia and a mission in space. They declined to provide further information, citing the high level of secrecy.

Fox News reported that using nuclear systems against satellites could potentially eliminate U.S. military communications and intelligence services. American media reports about a national and international security threat. There was initially no official confirmation of the reports.

Several Democrats in the House of Representatives, who are aware of this type of intelligence, tried to calm the general excitement after Turner’s statement. Turner’s unusual statement also drew sharp criticism. Some of his colleagues question his fitness to lead the Intelligence Committee.
