Firefighters are often insulted, insulted and even threatened during operations. More female members can have a de-escalating effect, reports a Florianis press officer.
In Steyregg, Upper Austria, young people seriously hindered firefighters’ access to a container fire. And in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria), Florianis were insulted during a night mission. These are just two of the most recent attacks that volunteers have faced.
Insults are becoming increasingly cruel
Why are there so many absurd arguments? “About 30 years ago there was definitely less aggression. Today, many in the new media are hiding behind anonymous addresses and taking action against us,” said Richard Berger, a press spokesman for the Federal Fire Brigade Association. There have always been petty fights. But now the insults are becoming more and more vicious.
Drivers often become upset when they have to wait or are diverted to an accident or emergency situation. “If you work on a voluntary basis and are then insulted in the worst way, it really irritates you,” said the press officer.
Positively, according to Berger: women can often intervene to de-escalate matters when, for example, hotheads clash between spectators or those involved in an accident. “Last year, 60 percent of new admissions were women!”
