The Ukrainian army said on Thursday that after months of hard fighting for the now heavily destroyed city of Avdiivka, it had to partially withdraw from its previous positions to “more advantageous positions”.
For days, military observers from both sides have consistently reported on the deteriorating situation of Ukrainian forces in and around Avdiivka. The garrison’s supply corridor had shrunk to less than three miles after months of fighting. The main supply route had almost been reached by Russian forces and there was a risk that the Ukrainian units would be encircled. Nearly a thousand civilians are said to still be holding out in the badly destroyed industrial city in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
