The Kremlin invites Palestinian organizations such as Hamas and the extremist Islamic Jihad to a meeting in Moscow on February 29. The country traditionally maintains close relations with many Palestinian organizations. However, relations with Israel have deteriorated during the ongoing war.
A total of twelve to fourteen organizations are expected to participate in the conference on March 1 or 2. Groups from Syria and Lebanon, the Islamist Hamas, the extremist Islamic Jihad and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) are believed to be involved. “We assume that the PLO is and remains the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. It is recognized by the international community and by us,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Friday.
The PLO was founded in 1964 to represent the Palestinians and was recognized by the United Nations in 1974. It is an umbrella organization of various groups. Fatah, which is part of it, has been a bitter rival to Hamas in recent years. The latter ousted its competitor from the Gaza Strip in a bloody power struggle in 2007, and reconciliation talks had been underway for years.
“Continue contacts”
According to the Russian diplomat, this is the third such forum. The deputy head of the political bureau, Moussa Abu Marsuk, will come to Moscow on behalf of Hamas. “We are continuing contacts with Hamas representatives and with our Israeli colleagues,” Bogdanov said. The relationship with Israel has been good and pragmatic in recent years, but has deteriorated during the current war.
