Germany has promised Ukraine a new arms package worth around 1.1 billion euros. This includes the delivery of 36 tank and wheel howitzers from industrial stocks, 120,000 artillery ammunition, two more air defense systems and Iris-T missiles.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz outlined the package during a joint appearance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin on Friday. The new security agreement between the two countries goes “a historic step further,” Scholz said.
“As Long as It Lasts”
The document stipulates that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s war of aggression – “as long as necessary,” Scholz assured again. In addition, Ukraine will be supported “in building modern, robust armed forces to deter future attacks.”
“Putin has not achieved any of his goals,” Scholz said, adding that Ukrainian forces were able to liberate more than half of the areas occupied by Russian forces. “The resilience of the Ukrainian people is admirable.”
Zelenskyj: Germany’s help is crucial
Zelensky noted that international military aid to his country was declining. The support from Germany is especially important. The Russian forces currently have a decisive advantage in their artillery along the front.
Billions and billions
Germany has provided around €7.1 billion in military support to Ukraine in 2024 and another €6 billion in commitment appropriations for subsequent years. In total, Germany provided services and resources worth approximately 28 billion euros, making it Ukraine’s second-largest military supporter after the US.
From Berlin to Paris
After his meeting with Scholz and German President Frank Walter Steimeier, Zelenskyj travels to Paris. There he is expected to sign a bilateral security treaty with French head of state Emmanuel Macron this evening.
