The US is increasing pressure on Hungary over the issue of Sweden joining NATO. This weekend, Democratic and Republican senators will travel to Budapest to discuss “strategic issues.” However, the Hungarian Foreign Minister was not very impressed by the American visit.
The US embassy in Budapest used this wording on Friday in connection with the trip. The meeting will mainly focus on Sweden’s NATO membership and questions about the aid package for Ukraine, broadcaster Klubradio reported on Friday.
Hungarian Foreign Minister: “Don’t tell us how to live”
The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the following statement on the occasion of the visit: “We warmly welcome all our foreign visitors, including the US Congressional delegation, so that we can show them that everything they read about Hungary in their liberal American media is fair. department head Péter Szijjártó advised the senators not to come “if they want to tell us how to live and what decisions to make.” Hungary is a sovereign state. The legislative process cannot be influenced from outside.
The Hungarian parliament had repeatedly postponed ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership. In early February, the opposition requested a special meeting on the issue. However, MPs from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s national-conservative Fidesz party stayed away. This makes Hungary the last NATO country to block ratification.
NATO’s Secretary General was recently optimistic
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently said that Orbán had assured him that a final decision should be taken after the start of Parliament’s spring cycle. There is a suspicion within NATO and the EU that Orbán wants to discipline Sweden because of his criticism of the lack of the rule of law in Hungary.
