Trench warfare, cross shots and now an attempt at a leadership debate: in an interview with Conny Bischofberger, the SPÖ leader goes on the attack. Andreas Babler (50) about centre-right-left, bruised egos, ‘fear biter’ Kickl and ‘traffic jam corpse’ Gusenbauer.
Also on Saturday morning, workers walked through the grounds of the former Semperit factory in Traiskirchen. Andreas Babler grew up nearby and that’s why he suggested the brick building in the heart of the industrial city as a meeting place for our interview – and immediately combined it with his daily dog walk. “During the pandemic I climbed the tower once, 84 meters high,” he says, describing the move from an industrial estate with thousands of jobs as one of many “red success stories”.
Wife Karin Blum (bottom left of the tweet) keeps the wire-haired Mayar-Vizla lady ‘Ika’ under control when Babler is supposed to pose for the ‘Krone’ photographer. “My two bosses,” he laughs. For the conversation we move to the new party headquarters of the SPÖ Traiskirchen, which the mayor and SPÖ chairman called “La Rossa”, “the Red”. Karin turns on the coffee maker there. “Ika” is tired from running and soon falls asleep under the red upholstered armchairs. At the buffet is a bust of Viktor Adler.
“Kron”: Mr. Babler, what goes through your mind when you walk the dog during such a special week?
Andreas Babler: There are always many things that worry me, but today, of course, the death of Alexei Navalny is particularly important. His death should be investigated by an international commission. Nobody trusts Putin’s regime.
