Styria doesn’t seem very wintery during the semester holidays. Spring-like temperatures cause slopes to melt at lower elevations. However, in larger ski areas you still have a solid snow cushion and are happy with the large influx of visitors.
The semester break in Styria feels more like Easter holidays this year: double-digit temperatures and bright sunshine don’t exactly create a winter mood.
Last day of skiing at the Sommeralm
Smaller ski areas are increasingly in need due to the persistent spring-like weather. For example, skiing has already come to an end on the Sommeralm: “It is with a heavy heart that we are starting the last working day of this season due to the snow conditions,” read the message on the Facebook page of Holzmeisterlifte on Sunday.
“Unfortunately, the end comes two to three weeks too early, but with the temperatures we cannot even make snow overnight,” says operator Wolfgang Wiltschnigg, but is still satisfied: “Last year we had the problem. We have great conditions for this this year. The season so far has generally been top in terms of visitor numbers.”
“There is still enough snow”
Especially in larger ski areas at higher altitudes, the mild weather can be viewed more calmly thanks to the firm snow cushion. “Although we have spring-like temperatures and the landscape is hardly wintry, there is plenty of snow on the slopes all the way to the valley,” says Fabrice Girardoni, division spokesperson for the Styrian cable car operators.
Booking situation across the board “very good”
“Thanks to the pleasant amounts of natural snow at the beginning of winter and of course the mechanical snow cannons, we have created a foundation that will help us through worse times like now.” the booking situation with accommodation providers in all areas of Styria.
Kreischberg and Lachtal boss Karl Fussi also confirmed this on Sunday: “Thanks to the altitude, we even have a beautiful winter landscape in the Lachtal, and on the Kreischberg the descent into the valley is also great. We are currently well visited, with many Dutch people coming.”
Will winter return?
The weather is unlikely to change in the coming days: “On Monday it may rain again and again in the valleys of Upper Styria, and at higher altitudes a little fresh snow is possible,” says Ubimet meteorologist Nikolaus Zimmermann. The weather in Föhn on Thursday heralds an approaching cold front, and temperatures may drop again from Friday. “At least in western Upper Styria, significant amounts of fresh snow may fall again,” the weather expert said.
