For two-thirds of respondents (65 percent) the car is indispensable in daily life. For example, you need it to balance your job and family, or you have poor access to public transport. This is the result of an integrated survey among 500 Austrians.
However, only those who also own a car were surveyed, which could have contributed to the high value. Those who are particularly dependent are those who commute to work or education, but also those who have poor access to public transport or who have to juggle family and work. In households with children, the car is still one of the most important means of transport. According to the research, 45 percent of multi-person households are completely dependent on it.
The car is also more popular than average among young people between the ages of 18 and 29 (72 percent) and among women (68 percent). In the age group between 30 and 49 years, every second person cannot do without their own car.
Viennese less dependent
Looking at the federal states, the residents of Upper Austria and Salzburg are especially dependent on the car (75 percent). According to the research, dependency is lowest in Vienna, at 35 percent. Compared to last year, the value has also increased here.
“The car has become much more important during the pandemic. However, the standardization has apparently not led to the Austrians needing fewer cars (…),” says Nikolaus Menches of AutoScout24. The online car market had the survey conducted among 18 to 69 year olds.
