The spokesperson EH Bildu in the Basque Parliament and head of the list for Gipuzkoa, Nerea Kortajaarnabelieves that the new decree on the use of Basque, which the Basque government will adopt in the next government council, “is not what the normalization of public administration requires at the moment.”

In an interview for the Radio Euskadi program “Boulevard”, Kortajaarna pointed out that “the conditions” are there to “make a leap”, because “the moment demands it”. According to him, it is a “Missed opportunitybecause I get the feeling that all this judicial offensive has also had its consequences, and that those restrictions and cuts proposed in this sense are reflected in this decree.”

‘This decree is coming 27 years later. Our language rights are not guaranteed if we go to administration. We don’t have the option to speak to her in the language we want. We have no guarantee of the right to work in Basque in public administration,” he added.

Kortajaarna has emphasized that “a whole judicial offensive against the Basque Country is underway” and that for this reason This decree should ensure “an important qualitative leap forward in all these areas.”

However, according to Kortajaarna, the decree contains “improvements”. Some of these improvements “have risks”. He has stated that it is “very positive” that “the scope of action of the decree is expanded and that the entire public administration is involved in this area”, but that “Osakidetza, the Ertzaintza or Justice will be left out of this decree . by almost 60% until 2033”.

On the other hand, he has “the asymmetrical profiles“, but at the same time he has regretted that they have not put in place mechanisms to “guarantee” that this does not translate “into a reduction of the language requirements of public administration”.

Likewise, he regretted that “the priority of Basque has been deleted from the original text or that the intention of the first word in Basque is no longer apparent.”
