A Catholic bishop was injured in an attempted assassination in Haiti. Pierre-Andre Dumas’ condition is said to be “stable”. Dumas had repeatedly warned about criminal gangs in the past and called for an end to their “despicable” practices.
He described kidnappings as a “heinous and barbaric act.” Now Dumas himself became a victim of criminals. He was reportedly injured in an explosion at a house in the capital Port-au-Prince. His life is not in danger.
Haiti’s Catholic bishops recently described one of the country’s worst crises. Armed gangs are already taking power, spreading fear and terror and sending hundreds of families into mourning. “For four years, our country has faced one of the longest and deadliest socio-political and security crises in its history (…) The state has lost control over the national territory,” the bishops said. The population is at the mercy of the ‘relentless violence of the gangs and their allies’.
President assassinated in 2021
President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in July 2021 and new elections have been on hold for years. Neighboring country the Dominican Republic closed its border due to a diplomatic dispute and increasing migration. In addition, the people of Haiti are experiencing unprecedented food shortages. Nearly half of the population would not have enough to eat. Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
