13 dead – and each is one too many! For people over 65, motorways, country roads and local roads in Tyrol are often risk zones. Mandatory examinations to check whether elderly people are still fit to drive are not up for discussion.
Whether in the car, on the motorcycle, on the bicycle or on foot: seniors are seen as a risk group in traffic – for themselves, but also for others. This is evident, not least from a balance sheet from the Austrian Statistical Office: according to these figures, never before have so many pensioners in Austria had an accident as in the first nine months of the previous year. From January to September, as many as 4,992 people over 65 were injured or even killed on local roads. “Statistics Austria will probably publish what the figures look like in Tyrol at the end of April 2024,” says Christian Gratzer of the Austrian Transport Club.
