The Russian disinformation war is raging – not only in Ukraine and the so-called Western states, but also in the Middle East, where there are apparently deliberate attempts to fuel the conflict between Israel and Palestine. About the strategies used, their actors and why propaganda in Israel has been less fruitful so far.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia looked for a way to gain influence in the Middle East. The US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program provided Putin with an opportunity to offer himself as a bipartisan alternative to the United States.
Not entirely altruistic, its interests in the region include controlling oil prices through OPEC, preventing terrorism from spreading into its own territory, and gaining international prestige, which has suffered significantly from the invasion of Ukraine.
With the country largely isolated from the West, it is therefore not surprising that Russia is turning increasing attention to the Middle East and Israel in particular.
