Cute quartet – capybara offspring at Schönbrunn . zoo

Date:

New offspring in Schönbrunn zoo again. Four capybaras were born there about two weeks ago, the zoo announced on Tuesday. For the two parents, it was the first offspring together, it said. The little ones are currently discovering the world and enjoying the warm weather. The cute animals can be admired in South America Park,” says

“The young capybaras spend most of the day sleeping and drinking milk, but they also eat some grass. They are precocial, which means that the young are already developed enough at birth to follow their parents on their own. They especially enjoy the warm weather and occasionally dare to bathe in the water with the adults,” says zookeeper Alexander Keller about the daily life of the small rodents.

Belongs to the guinea pig family
Water pigs, also called capybaras, are the largest living rodents with a shoulder height of up to 50 centimeters and belong to the guinea pig family. As the name suggests, they love to be in the water. They have short webbed feet between their toes and can dive for minutes.

“Capybaras are native to South America and therefore live in our South American park together with anteaters, vicuñas (a humpless camel species; nut), seriema (a ground bird species; nut) and nandu. The landscape of the facility is modeled after a Pampa. It is crossed by hills, streams and ponds and offers the animals a lot of variety and our visitors great perspectives,” said zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
