An Indian man was incredibly lucky on October 22, 2023: his roommate hit him on the forehead with a meat cleaver, which could have split his victim’s skull. The man suffered a gash four inches long and two inches deep on his head. The attacker is to be charged at the Vienna Regional Court with attempted murder.
The arguments over stolen food escalated
The newspaper deliverer had shared an apartment with the later victim and a third person since April last year. “It was a tense situation over a long period of time,” lawyer Andreas Reichenbach explained to the jury. The victim is said to have regularly taken the 46-year-old’s groceries. This allegedly escalated an argument on the day of the incident.
“The victim pulled out the suspect’s hair. You should know that for Sikhs – the defendant, who is also an Indian, belongs to this religion – the hair is sacred,” the prosecutor gives a motive for the violent blow with the cleaver.
Suspect speaks of self-defense
Lawyer Andreas Reichenbach gives a different version, which his client also gives: “I think he had no other choice.” According to the newspaper deliverer, the victim attacked him first and wrestled him to the ground – “He really abused him,” says Reichenbach. Taking the ax would have been self-defense.
If the 46-year-old Indian is found guilty, he faces life in prison. A verdict is expected this afternoon
