During work on a fully opened silo on Wednesday afternoon, a 40-year-old worker in Styria lost his balance and fell eight meters. The man was seriously injured.
While working at the top of a silo in St. Veit in the Leibnitz district on Wednesday afternoon, a 40-year-old worker suddenly lost his balance and fell about eight meters into the depths. Because the silo was completely empty at the time, the impact was particularly heavy. He suffered serious injuries to his cervical spine, chest and hand.
Deployment of rescue workers
Fortunately, the farm’s landlord was also on site at the time of the accident and, thanks to the worker’s cries for help, was able to initiate the rescue chain.
The rescue operation involved the volunteer fire brigades Leibnitz, Wagendorf and Labuttendorf with a total of 30 men, the Red Cross and the emergency doctor.
As the operation continued, the local Graz mountain rescue service was called in with a helicopter from the Ministry of the Interior, as there was no ladder or other descent aid in the empty silo. After initial treatment by the emergency doctor, the injured person was flown to LKH Graz by rescue helicopter.
