As a single parent – “At the end of the month I have 20 euros left”

Date:

The association “Single parents – but not the only ones” is currently sounding the alarm: the price increases are pushing those affected to their financial limits. The willingness to donate is also declining.

These are apparently ‘little things’ that many single parents can no longer afford: Mrs. N. is pregnant with her second child. Because it is a high-risk pregnancy, she would have to go to Vienna for examinations. But the money is not enough.

father is gone
“The father left us, the car needed repairs, my son needed new slippers and summer shoes, and now I have 20 euros left until the end of the month,” she says. She can’t afford gas, parking, or a train ticket, and she even saves on food.

Money is only sustainable at the end of the month
Mrs. F. has four boys to look after. The money doesn’t last until the end of the month, and many things have to be left out. “I have to rely on my car, otherwise I can’t get to work,” she says. Because she cannot afford summer tires, she continues to drive with winter tires.

Such requests for help now reach the “Single parent – but not alone” association almost daily. President Anika Karall reports that those who were already at risk of poverty or exclusion before the price increases are being hit particularly hard.

Everything too expensive
“The price increases have reached the people. On the one hand, we notice a greater demand for social counseling agreements and food vouchers. At the same time, however, the willingness to donate is declining,” says Karall.

The last food voucher was issued this week. The association now hopes for donations to continue supporting those affected. On June 19 (13.00 – 17.00) there is also a charity flea market in Wimpassing, Eisenstädterstraße 14.
