Sudden chaos at Vienna-Schwechat Airport: After a warning strike was declared among flight crews on Friday following a work meeting at Austrian Airlines, there were frustrated passengers in the afternoon. Marina (30) from Vienna had been waiting for departure since 10:30 am. Then it became clear: their plane would also no longer take off.
“I actually wanted to go to New York with my husband for ten days. Maybe also to Washington,” the Viennese says desperately to the “Krone”. The holidays are not over yet, but a smooth journey looks different. The couple had been informed the day before that there would be delays on their flight to Newark.
There were vouchers for flight delays
As compensation, they then received a gastrovoucher of seven euros per boarding pass. “But for the selected restaurants, the vouchers did not work at all. Most of them were also closed,” says the 30-year-old angrily.
Flights already cancelled
Friday was a long wait, not only for Marina, but also for other AUA passengers. There was a backlog of seats at the gates and no one wanted to stand anymore. Everyone waited anxiously for her departure. More than a hundred flights were canceled and numerous flights were delayed.
Via Geneva to the “Big Apple”
Around 1 p.m., more information arrived for Marina and her husband: “We have been automatically rebooked.” The couple would fly to Geneva and cannot start their further journey until Saturday morning. There will probably only be a recovery in the American metropolis…
Check flight status online
The AUA asked its customers to check their flight status online. Passengers who booked through a travel agent should contact them. At the beginning of the afternoon, twenty destinations were checked to see how a flight could still be arranged.
The factory meeting of the Austrian Airlines flying staff had decided on a warning strike until 5 p.m. The reason for the strike was the stalled collective labor agreement negotiations and “very poor pay” within the Lufthansa Group, according to Vida aviation division chairman Daniel Liebhart.
