At 5:30 am on Sunday morning, David Königshofer got into his car. A journey of about 15 hours awaited him – the route took the native from Linz to Kiev via Hungary. The former “Mister Austria” has lived and worked there as director since 2006. Until two years ago, during a night operation, he packed his wife and child into his car to flee the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
“Kron”:Mr. Königshofer, how does it feel today when you think about this day?
David Koenigshofer: We had already prepared two bags and when we heard the first bomb explosions, we quickly put the most important things in a few garbage bags. I then went to the embassy and we were able to escape via Poland in a convoy with the ambassador himself and some staff. This caused us fear, panic and of course deep sadness.
