A 57-year-old paraglider pilot crashed in the Dachstein Mountains on Saturday afternoon and was seriously injured.
Around 1 p.m., the 57-year-old from the Wels-Land district went on a paragliding flight from Stoderzinken with his 21-year-old son. In the Dachstein Mountains, at an altitude of about 2,300 meters, the 57-year-old’s paraglider suddenly collapsed, probably due to gusts of wind, and the man fell about 100 meters uncontrollably into the depths. Despite a rescue parachute being immediately deployed, the 57-year-old hit the ground in a steep rocky gully south of the Scheichenhoofd summit and was seriously injured.
Son witnessed accident
The son was able to observe the accident from the air and called the emergency services. Due to weather and local conditions, a helicopter rescue was not possible for the time being. The injured man was brought terrestrially to the summit by members of the mountain rescue service from Ramsau am Dachstein, where he was rescued via Taubergung by the Martin 1 emergency medical helicopter. He was flown to Schwarzach State Hospital.
