Unusually heavy rainfall has left at least 26 dead and more than 50 injured in Pakistan. This was announced on Sunday by civil protection authorities in the affected provinces.
The heavy rains swept across the country within 48 hours, causing houses to collapse and landslides, especially in the northwest. At the same time, snow fell in other areas. The meteorological department spoke of unusually heavy rainfall for this time of year.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone, in the northwest of the country, near the Afghan border, 21 deaths were reported. Another five deaths were reported in southwestern Balochistan province. On Wednesday, authorities in Balochistan evacuated about 10,000 residents of a port city after heavy rains.
Extreme weather events are increasing
Pakistan has been experiencing an increase in extreme weather events for some time now. In 2022, there were record floods during the monsoon season, temporarily inundating a third of the South Asian country. Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change, but has contributed little to global emissions.
