A 9-year-old girl was attacked and injured by a cougar in Washington state. The child was walking along a path near the village of Fruitland with two friends on Saturday morning at a family campsite when the cat attacked him.
According to a report from the AP news agency, the girl fought back as her friends ran away. Adults rushed to the rescue and found the nine-year-old covered in blood. The girl was then taken by helicopter to a hospital “with many different injuries to her upper body and face” and operated on, the uncle reported.
He made an appeal for donations on the online platform GoFundMe to raise money for the treatment costs of his niece, who woke up Monday from an artificial deep sleep. She is aware of what happened to her, can speak clearly, think clearly, move her arms and legs, “but she still has a lot of recovery ahead of her,” he said.
The cougar was killed by other people after the attack. His carcass should now be examined for any disease, according to the Washington State Conservation Agency.
“Don’t let the animal out of your sight”
Cougar attacks are rare, causing only two deaths in Washington state in the past century, said Staci Lehman, a spokeswoman for the Fish and Wildlife Service. “In this case, this girl has done nothing wrong. It happened so fast she couldn’t have done anything about it.”
Everyone in this situation should yell at the animal and try to make themselves bigger. If the big cat attacks, “defend yourself as best you can and try to stay on your feet,” the expert advised. ‘Don’t turn your back on her. Keep an eye on the animal,” Lehman added. “And don’t run away.”
